Jamaican Black Castor Oil vs Regular Castor Oil: Which Is Better?
Share
If you've shopped for castor oil, you've met two camps: regular (clear-to-pale) and Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO, dark and smoky). Here's what actually separates them.
It's about processing
Regular cold-pressed castor oil is simply pressed from the seeds — pale, mild, with all its natural goodness intact. JBCO is made by roasting the seeds first, then pressing; the ash from roasting gives it its dark colour and smoky scent, and a slightly more alkaline pH.
What that means in practice
The two are far more alike than different — both are rich, conditioning castor oil. JBCO's higher pH and ash content lead some to find it slightly more clarifying on the scalp. Regular cold-pressed castor oil is gentler in scent and, because it isn't roasted, keeps a lighter, cleaner profile.
Which should you choose?
- Prefer a clean scent and a gentle, versatile oil for hair, skin, brows and nails? Regular cold-pressed.
- Specifically want the traditional smoky JBCO experience? Choose a JBCO.
