Castor Oil Packs: What They Are and How to Use One
Share
Castor oil packs have moved from grandma's cupboard to wellness feeds everywhere. Behind the trend is a simple, soothing routine. Here's how to do it — and a level-headed take on what to expect.
What it is
A castor oil pack is a cloth soaked in castor oil, placed on the skin (most often over the abdomen) with gentle warmth, for 30–60 minutes. Traditionally it's used as a relaxing, warming routine.
How to make one
- Soak a piece of natural flannel or cotton in castor oil — damp, not dripping.
- Lay it over the area (commonly the abdomen).
- Cover with a cloth or old towel, and add a warm (not hot) compress.
- Rest for 30–60 minutes, then wipe the skin clean. Reuse the cloth, stored in a jar.
An honest note on benefits
Most reported benefits — relaxation, a soothing warm routine, soft skin — are real and pleasant. Broader health claims are largely traditional and not well proven, so enjoy the pack as a calming self-care habit rather than a treatment. Patch test, and skip it if pregnant or unwell without checking a professional.
