Saffron for Sleep: What the Research Says About a Few Threads at Night
Share
Saffron is the world's most expensive spice, but a small evening dose has drawn research attention for something other than flavour: sleep.
What the saffron sleep study found
In a 2020 randomized, placebo-controlled trial, adults with poor sleep who took a standardized saffron extract reported better sleep quality and easier falling asleep after one to two weeks. The study (Lopresti and colleagues, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine) gave healthy adults with self-reported poor sleep a saffron extract or a placebo and tracked sleep over the trial. The saffron group reported improvements in sleep quality and how rested they felt. Researchers have linked saffron's active compounds, crocin and safranal, to effects on mood-and-sleep pathways, including melatonin regulation.
Worth noting: the trial used a concentrated, standardized extract at a measured dose. A pinch of culinary saffron threads in warm milk is a gentler, traditional version of the same idea — a calming pre-bed ritual rather than a clinical dose.
How to drink saffron at night
- Warm the milk: gently heat a cup of milk (dairy or plant).
- Add a pinch of threads: 4–5 strands of Asuka Kashmiri Saffron — no more. Saffron is potent and a little colours and flavours the whole cup.
- Steep and sip: let it sit a few minutes until the milk turns golden, then drink it 30–60 minutes before bed as part of winding down.

Use a light hand
Culinary saffron is safe in the small amounts used in cooking and tea. Very high doses are not advisable, and pregnant women in particular should avoid large quantities — keep to a few threads.
