How to Drink Saffron at Night: The Golden Milk Routine
Share
There is a reason a cup of warm, golden saffron milk has been an evening routine across Kashmir, Persia and India for centuries. It is the kind of small, deliberate pause that tells your body the day is done.
Here is how to make it properly — how much saffron to use, the simple recipe, and how to tell real Kashmiri threads from the dyed imitations that flood the market.
Why saffron at night?
Saffron has long been the heart of a wind-down routine: a warm drink, a quiet moment, a slower breath before bed. The value is as much in the routine as the spice — a consistent, calming cue you give yourself each evening.
How much saffron? A pinch, never a spoonful
Three to five threads per cup is all you need. Saffron is the world’s most precious spice — potent, aromatic, and wasted if you overdo it. A pinch turns a whole cup gold.
The golden milk recipe
- Warm a cup of milk (dairy or oat) gently — do not boil.
- Add a pinch of Asuka Kashmiri Saffron threads and let them steep until the milk slowly blooms golden, about five minutes.
- Optional: a little honey, a pinch of cardamom or a few strands more for richness.
- Sip slowly, ideally 30 minutes before bed.
How to spot real Kashmiri saffron vs. dyed fakes
This is where most saffron disappoints. Here is the quick test:
- Colour & shape: real threads are deep crimson with a flared, trumpet-shaped end. Dyed strands look uniformly red, often cut flat.
- Aroma: genuine saffron smells of honey and fresh hay. Fakes smell of little, or of chemicals.
- The water test: drop a few threads in warm water. Real saffron releases its gold slowly while the threads keep their red. If the water turns bright yellow instantly, it is dyed.
Our threads are hand-harvested Grade-A Kashmiri saffron. For the longest, most prized grade, look to Asuka Mongra Saffron — the all-stigma threads connoisseurs ask for.
Frequently asked questions
How many threads per cup? Three to five. More colours the milk deeper but is not necessary.
Can I use water instead of milk? Yes — saffron water or tea works the same way; milk simply makes it richer.
How do I store saffron? In its glass jar, away from light and heat. It keeps its aroma for a long time when sealed.
