Peppermint Oil for Headaches: A Step-by-Step Method
Share
Reaching for peppermint oil at the first sign of a tension headache is a habit passed down for generations — and there's good reason it stuck. Here's how to do it properly and safely.
Why peppermint helps
Peppermint's cooling comes from menthol. Applied (diluted) to the temples and neck, that cool, tingling sensation is part of the relief, and the routine of slowing down and breathing helps too.
The method
- Dilute 1–2 drops of peppermint oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil.
- Dab onto your temples, the sides of your forehead and the back of your neck — keeping well clear of the eyes.
- Gently massage for a few seconds.
- Sit somewhere quiet, close your eyes and take slow breaths for a few minutes.
Safety
Always dilute — never apply neat near the eyes. Patch test first. Avoid use on or around young children, and keep peppermint away from the face of infants entirely.
When it's more than a tension headache
Peppermint is comfort care for everyday tension headaches. Severe, sudden, or frequent headaches deserve a doctor's attention — don't self-treat those with oils.
