Beetroot and Blood Pressure: What the Research Shows
Share
Beetroot keeps coming up in heart-health conversations, and unlike a lot of food claims, there's real research here. Let's look at it honestly — including the limits.
The nitrate–nitric oxide pathway
Beetroot is rich in dietary nitrates. Your body converts these to nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax and widen. Wider, more relaxed vessels can mean easier blood flow — the mechanism behind the interest in blood pressure.
What studies suggest
A number of trials have found that beetroot juice or powder can produce modest, short-term reductions in blood pressure, especially in people with elevated readings. The effect is real but generally modest — beetroot is a supportive food, not a substitute for medication.
How people use it
A daily serving of beetroot powder in water or a smoothie is the usual approach. Consistency matters more than a single big dose.
Important
If you have high blood pressure or take medication for it, talk to your doctor before relying on beetroot — and never stop prescribed treatment in favour of a food. Think of beetroot as a healthy addition, not a replacement.
