Beetroot Powder Before a Workout: How, When and How Much

Most "natural pre-workouts" are wishful thinking. Beetroot is a rare exception — it has genuine research behind it, and athletes from cyclists to runners use it for a reason.

Why beetroot works

Beetroot is rich in dietary nitrates, which your body converts to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps blood vessels widen, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to working muscles. Studies have linked beetroot to improved endurance and exercise efficiency — meaning a given effort can feel a little easier.

How much

Research generally uses a meaningful dose of nitrates. With beetroot powder, a typical serving is around a teaspoon to a tablespoon — follow the serving size on the pack and don't overdo it.

When to take it

Timing matters: nitric oxide levels tend to peak roughly 2–3 hours after consumption. So take your beetroot drink a couple of hours before training, not five minutes before you start.

How to take it

Stir into water or juice, or blend into a pre-workout smoothie. A citrus base tastes great and the vitamin C is a nice bonus. (Harmless heads-up: beetroot can tint your, ahem, bathroom visits pink — totally normal.)
