How to Store Saffron (and Revive Tired Threads)

Saffron is an investment, and how you store it decides whether that investment lasts two years or fades in two months. Good news: it's simple.
The three enemies: light, heat, air
Saffron's aromatic compounds break down with exposure to light, heat and oxygen. Keep threads in an airtight container, away from the stove and out of direct light. A cool, dark cupboard is perfect — not the windowsill, and not right above the oven.
Glass over plastic
Store in glass or the original jar rather than a porous plastic bag that lets aroma escape. Our saffron ships in a sealed glass jar for exactly this reason.
Should you refrigerate?
Generally no — a cool cupboard is fine, and a fridge invites condensation each time you open it, which moisture-loving saffron doesn't appreciate. If you do refrigerate, keep it tightly sealed.
Reviving quiet threads
Older saffron losing its punch? Lightly warm the threads (a dry pan off the heat, or a few seconds of gentle warmth) before blooming them in warm liquid. It helps coax out the remaining aroma.
